07/13/10: Letter from North Stars Club President

Dear Calfornia North Stars & Lady North Stars club members:

We have good things happening and we are excited to tell you about them!

As we all recover from the arson fire at Iceland Skating Rink of Sacramento - we have some good news. We have been notified that Iceland WILL reopen this November as a retro outdoor skating facility - "Iceland under the stars." The plan for now is that Iceland will operate Nov - Feb, longer if the weather holds out, until a roof can be constructed. This is wonderful news! The rink will have new, fully painted ice in reflective white, newer hockey boards, and down the road as funds come in, a tent roof. And best of all, NO HAND RAIL!

We are planning to continue to offer our programs! The coaching team will be meeting and discussing our options - to offer In-house hockey, NorCal youth hockey teams, youth hockey tournament teams, girl's hockey & women's hockey teams, adult skills & drills, adult Iron Man league and more. These programs will be coordinated, scheduled and announced soon! This may include utilizing our neighboring rinks as well to begin the season if necessary. Parents' input is welcome!

Iceland is looking for volunteers - they meet every Thursday night to work on the rink so please come lend a hand if you are free.  They are currently looking for a volunteer plumber ASAP. If you can help with the plumbing please contact Chris, the rink manager, at 916-870-0216.

Yes, as a club we need a year around, full size facility. As a club, we are working to build a new permanent facility in Sacramento for the California North Stars Hockey Club and for the public as a whole. As this moves forward we will keep you posted!

We hope you had a great summer and we will see you on the ice SOON!

Sincerely,
John Thompson
President & Director of Operations

The California North Stars suffered a great loss on Sunday March 28, 2010. The historic Iceland Skating Rink of Sacramento was tragically burned down taking away the home of our hockey club and destroying thousands of dollars of hockey equipment and supplies. While many people are mourning the loss of a place where childhood memories were made, members of the California North Stars are mourning the loss of their current hockey home.

The North Stars' coaches, parents, and players donated countless hours of their time refurbishing the interior of the rink over the last three years. Newer dasher boards and glass were transported and installed, the boards and rink doors were repaired/replaced, the walls were repainted, the ice resurfaced, and the rink was revitalized by several caring and devoted volunteers from our club. Hockey gear, skates, jerseys, new hockey nets and pucks were all donated or acquired through grants. Practice jerseys, team jerseys, club jackets and sweatshirts were hanging in the pro shop. These were all lost in the fire as well.

We are all saddened by this terrible event, but we are determined to rebuild and replace. But we need your help. As a 501c3 public charity, the North Stars rely on public support to help provide hockey to anyone who wishes to play, regardless of their financial situation. Generous donations will help put gear on our players and help to pay for ice rental. With the help of generous donors and the love and dedication of our club members, the California North Stars will rise from the ashes. Thank you for your support and we'll see you on the ice soon!
